Since our last exhibition as a collective, things have changed. We each went our separate ways, yet surprisingly remained friends. It seems that each one of us continues to work in his own way. Maybe it was for the best that we split as a collective, it was pretty hard to keep all the egos down. You can check out new works of John Croat and TAR on their webs. This exhibition is dedicated to our grandfather K.P.

K.P. was one of those who went through life almost unnoticed, living in a shadow. He was born in 1892, probably in Germany, a fact we can only assume according to his strange accent. There is no exact information concerning his arrival to Zagreb. It is known that until 1900 the young K.P. had lived in Zagreb with his father. After his father passed away in 1905, K.P. was put into the Eduard Baron Jelačić Bužimski Orphanage. After several unsuccessful escape attempts, he finally got out in 1908 and became a church attendant in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an occupation which would provide him for the next 50 years. His life was a routine that would rarely be interrupted. He attended services on daily basis, up to five times a day. He collected various kind of waste material from the streets and brought it home. His appearance and clothes were modest. He was a bachelor. In 1930 he moved into a basement apartment in Palmotićeva Street. He died in 1973 and was buried anonymously at Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb.

Little has been known about the K.P.’s short love affair which resulted in a child. His son has long been ashamed of his poor origin and kept it a secret. His existence could have gone to oblivion if wasn’t for the Croatian Designers Society who had been given premises at the crossing of Boškovićeva and Plamotićeva Street. In the ground plan of the building, except for the gallery, there was a small space - separated by a wall - which was called “the studio”.
During the adaptation process the wall was torn down in order to get a unified gallery space for the Croatian Designers Society, while the storage of the studio objects was given to the Filip Trade Collection. A fascinating novel manuscript on more than 19 000 pages was found, as well as hundreds of pages of collages and drawings, many of which supplement the novel.

In March 2009 Puma34 Collective attend a meeting at the Filip Trade Collection about the preparation for the exhibition at the 11th Motovun Film Festival. Two members of the collective recognize the picture of their grandfather K.P. among the transferred studio objects. Due to family conflicts, they have known nothing about their grandfather’s life.
Today, 36 years after death, his incredible secret life and work are coming into the light of day. His opus has become a creative platform for the work of Puma34 who are appropriating his visual language. The Filip Trade Collection has published the book „Data book on Hydrocarbons“ which had been created as the result of the fascination with their grandfather's unpublished novel.

As part of the promotion of the book the Croatian Designers Society has temporarily reconstructed the original situation of the studio with its immeasurable works of art, family photographs, the ballet shoes collection, and the perfectly preserved atmosphere of a lost time. Within the promotion ceremony the book will be consecrated, and it will be available at a reduced price.

Recently I was turned into a giant tortoise. I was dreaming and in my dream I was this giant animal crawling around the beaches of Southern Pacific. My dream ends when I was attacked and killed by a horse. This violent horse stomped me to death only to eat my young.
Pigs also attack the young, and can chew up tortoises as large as twenty pounds. Dogs kill even larger ones. Rats and cats devour the hatchlings. All of these animals were introduced by man.
I woke up and hated myself for the rest of the day.

Due to some newspaper reporters, the biggest secret of Croatian street art scene finally got revealed. It started with the speculations in the last issue of weekly newspaper 'Globus'(check out the interview), and culminated a few days later. The identities of members of an art collective also known as 'Puma34' are finally no longer a secret. Pretending to be a on-man-street-art-figure, they acted as a collective, with each member adding their own unique style to the group. Hopefully, we will continue to do so, working like a giant organism instead of insisting on our individualities. It is our opinion that our real identities are of no importance, since only in the form of 'Puma34' we reach our full potential.

Intense days

Last few days have been very intense... I had a show in Motovun, promoting my book (yeah, it is finally out :)). I had some really great moments during those few days, but I also had moments when I felt terrible. I lost some of my old friends, gained some new, was disappointed in some of them, and positively surprised in others. There were times when I just wanted to give up on everything, I was so angry and bitter. Finally, I had to escape from Motovun in order to preserve my sanity. Now, writing this from my home, I still do not have a clear picture what went wrong, why was I so anxious to leave. Maybe all I need is some rest. I wanted to write something positive about this whole thing, but I still feel very bitter and disappointed about the way some of my friends behaved... Love for my friends, ignore for my enemies.

I was asked to participate on a group show in Luxembourg, same as two years ago. I was happy to go, since I really loved it last time i was there. I was planning to improvise, maybe do some street work and transfer the photos inside the gallery. No pressure.
When I got to Luxembourg, I had no idea what to do, nor did I have any finished works with me. As I was watching tv in my hotel room, every channel had the same story about the 40th anniversary of the Apollo11 mission to the moon. 20 channels and nothing to watch. I was so irritated that I started to plan a retaliation... what if Marilyn Monroe replaced Neil Armstrong as a third astronaut during that flight? What if she made the first contact with the extraterrestrials? How would that have affected her features? (He he he)

Interrupted meanings

When one looks at a certain object only as representing another, the idea one has of it is a sign. This is usually how one looks at paintings...So when a sign becomes a representation of this certain object it can be slowly interfered with to the boundaries of its legibility. The sign works only as long as we associate it with this certain object.
By combining different sets of signs, one can create a personal meta-language, a very own code of communication. Choosing to place this in the public places, one can make a network of signs, a meta-map. Nonetheless, a viewer cannot crack their code and is incapable of re-creating it, so the message of this codes remains enigmatic.

When you see a color in a certain light, you are changed forever. When you see it again, you start to develop an associative attachment to it. Every time you see that color in that certain light you evoke a particular feeling. In other words, that color becomes an emotional trigger.
Anyway, I have (unconsciously) founded my work on a convention. Or a set of conventions. Trying to change these is almost impossible, so in order to progress i have to develop new ones. Their boundary is not stable, since every new work ads another layer to it and its history and forms the definition a convention itself. Perpetually going back to older conventions and redefining them, upgrading the to the current setting is a necessary step, reinforcement of the foundation.

Today me and my girlfriend had a small discussion about religion. She called me a sceptic. I just do not see the point of believing in conventions based on individual opinions. Not only regarding religion, but also mathematics and social behavior in general. I ended the upcoming argument with a line i heard the other day; "Your soul may belong to Jesus, but your ass is mine", signed: Devil.
Anyway, i thought that halftone pattern might work better for bigger stencils. Guess I was right.

This little bastard is a woodcut, hand carved and hand printed with a spoon. It took days to cure my blistered hands.

Got fed up with raster dots and went berserk with this fellow, woodcut hand carved and printed. Seems I got used to not being afraid to do a little work...

After the baby accident from the previous post I got paranoid and started being to attached to the posters. I had a hard time parting with them...

This week i tried enlarging my smaller collages. They are hand painted with additional print cutouts and smaller drawings.
It is fascinating how much faster i can work when i know that i am going to paste the work outside. And it feels much better than when it is on canvas.

This little baby was painted on 3 am yesterday in a manic state of mind, and pasted outside immediately. Somehow i knew it was pasted in the wrong spot, but i went to sleep in anticipation of taking the photo of it in the morning.
Morning turned out to be 3 pm, and when i got to the site, it was already torn down. No matter how often this happens, it hurts every time.
So i painted a little r.i.p. for the torn down baby from the poster. Guess it is in baby heaven now. :))

I was collecting all this panels in some lucid ambition to paint them, but i did was keep piling them up. Now i need more space in the studio so it was time for them to hit the streets. I also pasted some of the old drawings i had no room for anymore... It is liberating to have more space, but sometimes it is also hard to let them all go...

I have recently seen the movie Gomorra, which deals with crime and the Camorra in Naples and Caserta. I was fascinated with the characters from the movie, and after some time on the net i found the real Totò, the guy on which the character in the movie is based on. He was in juvenile institution from the age of 8 to 16. He is believed to have murdered 15 people, including his mother. The bizarre fact is that he used to draw his victims on the walls of his cell. So here I present; Totò!

It has been almost two weeks since i last posted something, and i feel pretty crappy for being absent. I have been busy painting graff, back to that nasty habit, this time tried to get back the innocence of the 10 year old holding the can for the first time. As usual, i pushed myself too far and ended up in bed for 10 days as a result of painting for two hours every day for a week in freezing weather. I also got sick from my standard drawing tools, they seem not to be working for me any more. I desperately wanted to draw but could not. So i switched to digital drawing, just to give it a shot. And i love the rgb clours mode.
